Surface Mimic is a 3D scanning company I founded in 2011, used in the video game and visual effects industries by companies such as Sony, Activision, Blizzard, CD Projekt Red, Naughty Dog, Valve, Psyop, The Mill, ILM, Weta.
It uses a proprietary scanning technology I developed, based on Photometric Stereo - a per pixel camera based scanning technique using light intensities in a photo series.
I founded the company based on many years of personal interest in materials, textures and acquisition technologies. I have developed technologies for Surface Mimic such as:
- Computer vision techniques such as photometric stereo, photogrammetry and structured light.
- C++ for heavy calculations, C# for tools and processing.
- Knowledge of PBR game rendering pipelines.
- Blender and Python for synthetic data generation for testing various algorithms and rig designs.
- Physical camera rigs, electronic design using microcontrollers.
- Expertise in the physics of cameras and light.
